My husband and I continue to live in a small cabin in the Colorado Mountains, in a calendar-picture setting of deep woods at almost 9,000 feet elevation, and a creek that runs through the unfenced nine acres of property. Even though we are somewhat isolated, we have many visits from bears, fox, coyotes, deer, pine martin, ermine, big horn sheep, wild turkey, mountain lion, chipmunks, squirrels, and a multitude of birds of all colors. In the summer we have as many as 30-40 hummingbirds that keep me busy filling three feeders daily. Our faithful Catahoula and Golden Retriever have protected us during several encounters with the larger animals. We grow a variety of wildflowers, perennials, a few annuals and vegetables in the late spring and summer, as we can get as much as two to three feet of snow in April. When I do leave our cool, clear "garden of paradise," I enjoy going to estate sales, researching the old mining history of our area, gardening (including growing African violets in my sunroom), working on the genealogy of our families, some traveling, reading, and learning new things (like crocheting, knitting, and quilting). A list of things I want to do and learn to do continues to grow with learning to play the harp and scrapbooking at the very top. I am so excited about getting together with "old" friends and relatives and becoming better acquainted with classmates I didn't know as well at school. He went into the Air Force and we traveled the entire 24 years until he retired and went to work for the State of Alabama. We settled in Montgomery and I worked in an Advertising Agency for 23 years on the McDonald's account and now I'm retired. We had three children, but lost our son to cancer when he was 35 years old. Now, we have two daughters and they also reside in the area. We have seven grandchildren and four 1/2 great grandchildren.
